Spiritual Pilgrimage: Travel + Self Growth

Life works in cycles, and we’re all moving towards completeness. That’s why it’s so satisfying to watch the sun dip into the ocean at the end of a long day - cycle complete. It’s why many of us find joy in the process of planting seeds. Then, we nurture the seedling until it becomes a plant big enough to grow its own fruit. Finally, as we bite into the fruit for the first time it’s pure bliss. Ah, fruition.

A pilgrimage is in itself a cycle as well. The type of pilgrimage I’m referring to here is a spiritual pilgrimage, an individual journey that brings you closer to the truest you possible.

The Calling

The movement toward wholeness is a life-long journey. You may find that you feel a sense of deep longing, a desperation within to find a deeper meaning and purpose in your life. It’s  a quiet voice within that urges in the dark of night, “There’s more. You must go find it.”

“In each of us dwells a pilgrim. It is the part of us that longs to have direct contact with the sacred.”  - Phil Cousineau

This longing is the start of your journey, your spiritual pilgrimage. Once you answer the call to adventure, you’re well on your way.

Soulful Travel

Travelers from all over the world choose pilgrimage as a means of self discovery. Because of this, you'll find pilgrimage routes in all corners of the globe, so you have options when choosing your route!

Will you follow in the footsteps of the vikings in Norway along St. Olav Ways?

Will you find yourself among the shinto shrines of the Kumano Kodo, also known as the emperor’s path?

Or maybe you’ll choose a classic pilgrimage like the Camino de Santiago in Spain or Portugal.

Additionally, there’s always the option of walking your own path. For instance, you can create your own route because pilgrimage can be done anywhere and anytime.

The important thing to remember is to be clear with your intentions and walk with an open heart!  The answers to your questions will show up along the way.

It won’t always be easy, as pilgrimage isn’t meant to be. Your journey will present tests, and you’ll be challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. Yet this is the only way. You’re reading this now because you’re meant to go on an adventure - it’s your soul’s calling.

Preparing for your Journey

It’s true that one is never fully prepared for pilgrimage, yet one is always ready. You can train your body, study the maps, learn the language, and research the places you’ll pass along the way.

The vital preparation you can do now is to notice. Life’s mysteries will speak to you, and as Phil Cousineau says in The Art of Pilgrimage, “You must learn to see through the eyes of the heart.”

Each person has a unique destiny. May you be one step closer to uncovering your true nature through this journey.
