7 Incredible Books that Have Deeply Impacted My Life
Hola Lotus Compass community! Jamie here, and you know what...I've got to say, I. LOVE. BOOKS. Cat's out of the bag. I'm a book nerd. I love reading. How incredible is it that all the wisdom and knowledge in the world is accessible through reading books? In fact, many of my life's deepest, most profound shifts have come from books. Without further ado, I'm excited to share with you my list of 7 incredible books that have deeply impacted my life.
1. Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche
I've read this multiple times. The lessons in its worn pages teach me something different with every read. Consider it a guide for living as well as a meditation guide.
2. Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser
If women were the storytellers, the story would change. Cassandra Speaks is beautifully written and empowering. I couldn't stop reading this and felt changes taking place as I read each chapter. Lesser speaks from decades of experience doing the inner work alongside the outer work (aka activism). There's a great mix of wisdom traditions, ancient mythology, personal stories, and guided practices for your own life. For the contemporary feminist, buy this book. You won't regret it.
3. Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn
The classic mindfulness guide to transform your daily life. The chapters are short, so you can read one a day and benefit greatly.
4. Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh
This book found me as I was walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. The simplicity of this Zen Buddhist master's words are deeply moving. In this book, you'll find meditation practices and personal anecdotes that will help you on your path. "The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it." Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us.
5. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Now is a no-nonsense guide to daily living in the present moment. Read if you're ready for a change (for the better) in your life!
6. When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödron
When shit hits the fan, this will always be my go-to book. Pema masterfully explains how to use trying times as medicine for your soul. I honestly can't imagine anyone who wouldn't benefit from this book. Read it!
7. The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell
This is a deep dive into the world of myth and the hero's journey as taught by Joseph Campbell. Campbell, a comparative religion and mythology scholar, weaves together religions and ancient traditions in a meaningful and fascinating way. The book is based off an interview between Campbell and Bill Moyers in 1988. It's a book I can pick up anytime and learn something from!
